The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF) is very pleased that diabetes has been included in the national medical research funding agenda of the Republican National Committee Platform. Diabetes afflicts 16 million Americans and
Diabetes belongs among the top priorities on the national health agenda, in the research budget of both the National Institutes of Health and the Veterans Administration, and in the federal government's support plans for teaching hospitals and medical schools---until a cure for this widespread, chronic, and costly disease has been found.
Founded in 1970 by a group of committed and impassioned parents of children with diabetes, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation has enlisted and engaged volunteers, members, government and private agencies in a single-minded fight for a cure for diabetes and its complications. We cannot afford to be satisfied with halfway measures. It is not enough to improve treatment or to make more manageable a disease that shortens the productive lifespan by 20 years while it costs an average of $600,000 per person for treatments and in-hospital care.
The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation exists for a single purpose: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications. To that end, we give more money to diabetes research than any other nonprofit organization in the world. Our primary commitment is to support research into the mechanisms and causes of diabetes, for the search for the cause is the key to the cure.
Leaders of both parties have always demonstrated support for medical research. We urge Republicans and Democrats alike to join us now in the fight against diabetes, a fight that will end only with a cure.
