15th Annual Main Event Gala to honor Talbots CEO

On Saturday, June 14, the Bay State Chapter will cap off our most successful year ever with a celebration of our 15th annual Main Event Gala honoring Arnold B. Zetcher, President and CEO of Talbots, now celebrating its 50th Anniversary as a leading specialty retailer of women’s and children’s clothing. Once again, the Boston Marriott Copley Place will host this elegant black tie affair.

Mr. Zetcher, who joined Talbots in 1987 as president and assumed the title of CEO the following year, oversees all aspects of the company’s impressive operations. Well known for its classic approach to fashion, this Hingham-based company has become a good friend and active supporter of JDF. Recently , Talbots designated JDF chapters across the nation as the charitable beneficiaries for all new openings of its Talbots Kids & Babies stores. To date 14 JDF chapters have benefited from this relationship, including the Bay State Chapter.

The selection of Mr. Zetcher as this year’s honoree reflects the esteem in which JDFI and the Bay State Chapter hold Talbots for its generous support and the pride we feel from our partnership with this company known worldwide for its superior standards of quality and service.

Spectacular entertainment will be provided by the 16-piece Winiker Orchestra. This well-known local musical institution recently brought down the house at President Clinton’s inaugural gala.

We will reprise last year’s popular silent auction filled with over 100 unique and special items. This year’s Grand Prize Sweepstakes is a trip for two to Paris on American Airlines. So don’t miss what promises to be a truly memorable and fun evening.

To order your tickets, to place a gala journal ad, or for corporate sponsorship information, please call (617) 431-0700.

Gala Auction Items Needed

The auction held during last year’s Main Event Gala was great fun and alone raised over $26,000 for research in one night. We are actively searching for great items to auction off and great volunteers to help make this year’s auction an even bigger success. Please contact Dawn Sadler at 431-0700 if you want to help and/or if you can provide or secure auction items such as:

Mail Order Pharmacy

An Open Letter to JDF Friends and Family:

As Chairperson of the JDF Bay State Chapter’s FIFTY 50 Pharmacy program I am writing to ask you to join me in trying the FIFTY 50 Pharmacy for yourself. FIFTY 50 Pharmacy is a full service pharmacy where you can order aspirin, band aids, or anything else available at your local pharmacy. However, it was founded by a person with diabetes and specializes in diabetes supplies.

For introducing our members and friends to their service, FIFTY 50 is giving JDF 50% of all of its profits (therein the company name). In other words, if you would buy your diabetes and other pharmaceutical supplies through FIFTY 50 instead of your current supplier, half of the profits from every order you place will come back to JDF to invest in research. Just by paying a bill we would have paid anyway, we can each increase our contribution to finding a cure for diabetes!

FIFTY 50 has already contributed over $2.1 million to JDFI, with an additional $2 million pledged over the next two years. Indeed FIFTY 50 has become the largest corporate donor to JDFI!

I signed up with the FIFTY 50 Pharmacy last year and am truly satisfied. But I can’t put it any better than Jim Portner from the JDF Dallas Chapter:

"The life of a diabetic is hard enough, it is wonderful to be able to remove just a little bit of the daily aggravation. What used to be a chore - to keep a regular stock of supplies, to worry about insurance, to unexpectedly get caught without this or that, has been completely eliminated. FIFTY 50 handles everything - insurance prequalification, insurance billing, transferring of prescriptions from your old pharmacy, they even monitor usage and provide ‘automatic’ shipment so that you never find yourself running out of anything at a critical time. FIFTY 50 has eliminated absolutely every inconvenience. The staff are truly dedicated to providing unparalleled service and support to each of their customers."

Anyone can use FIFTY 50 Pharmacy -- your friends, family, or neighbors -- and every time they do they will be helping to find a cure for diabetes. There’s no cost to join and it only takes a simple phone call to sign up. Please read the enclosed brochure and give FIFTY 50 a try. I believe you’ll be glad you did. If you try it and like it, please tell a friend (or 5!) and drop me a note. If you don’t like it, please be sure to let me know.

On behalf of the JDF, thank you for your support.

Sincerely yours,

L. Dan Lobdell

Recap of Recent Events

No Small Feat! 1996 Walk For The Cure Raises $185,000!

On Sunday, September 29, 1996 over a thousand walkers, led by TV celebrities Suzanne Bates and Mike Dowling, left Boston’s City Hall Plaza in hot pursuit of a common goal: to cure diabetes and its complications. The Walk raised over $185,000 for diabetes research, making it the largest Walk in the Bay State Chapter’s history. Thanks to all of our Walkers and volunteers for going that extra mile, or two!

Kudos to our top individual and team fund raisers. The Marshalls team is #1 with a combined $42,918 from sneaker sales and pledged walkers. The Jones & Bartlett team, a perennial leader, followed with $17,495, and right on their heels was Team Ben with $13,218. In his first year as a walker, Ben Rosenthal was the #1 individual fund raiser with an incredible $10,738, followed by Kathy Ferlito with $4,375 and Kevin Jones with $ 4,009. Great job guys! Save the date ...1997 Walk For The JDF Cure, Saturday, September 20, 1997.

A special thanks to all of our 1996 Walk sponsors: American Airlines; Boston Building Trades; Cellular One; Eli Lilly & Company, Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream; Hard Rock Cafe; LifeScan; MediSense, Inc.; National Amusements; NATCO; Quality Beverage, LP; Ryder Truck Rentals, Stoneham; Sedgwick; Sheraton Boston Hotel & Towers; and The Stop & Shop Companies, Inc.

Gift Wrap 1996: Success in a Pretty Package

400+ thank yous go to those many dedicated volunteers who "Wrapped Up A Cure For Diabetes" this past holiday season on behalf of JDF. Led by Nancy Jones, Susan Greeley, Cindy Pacino, Kathi Osborn, and June Connors, and with the help of this always cheerful team of wrappers, Gift Wrap 1996 raised over $74,000!

In addition to our tireless volunteers, this great success, and our sincere thanks, are owed to: our good friends at the South Shore Plaza, Burlington Mall, and The Shops at Prudential Center; Bags & Bows, A Division of Chiswick, principal supplier and sponsor of this year’s event; and Paul Stewart, NHL referee and a member of our Board, who spent several days meeting the public and signing autographs to raise money and awareness for us. We would also like to thank our friends at Neiman-Marcus for their support and NYNEX Mobile Communications, in Burlington, the official Gift Wrap Cellular Phone sponsor.

With A Little Help From Our Friends

We want to express our sincere gratitude to the following companies and individuals for finding fun, creative, and mutually beneficial ways to benefit JDF through their normal course of business:

Talbots and JDF in Fashion

All this year, celebrating their 50th Anniversary, Talbots is donating a portion of opening sales at their new Talbots Kids & Babies stores to local JDF chapters. On Saturday, February 15, Talbots , the leading specialty retailer and catloger of women’s classic apparel, opened their largest location in New England at the South Shore Plaza. Talbots’ donation of $2,000 to the Bay State Chapter from this store opening brings their total donation to JDF for 14 such openings to $18,000.

Tax Seminars Raise $6,000 for the Cure

Proceeds from the ninth annual year-end tax seminars hosted by the Boston accounting firm of Gray, Gray & Gray raised over $6,000 for the Bay State Chapter. Shown accepting a check is (center) NHL referee and chapter board member Paul Stewart, , accompanied by Gray, Gray & Gray Managing Partner Neil D. Krug (left) and Senior Tax Partner Michael D. Koppel (right). Gray, Gray & Gray is one of New England’s leading independent accounting firms.

Children’s Diabetes Association Golf Tournament Hits the Green for JDF

As we welcome the new golf season, we thank the friends and family of Paul, Sharyn and Nicole Reilly for designating JDF as the beneficiary of the proceeds from their 2nd Annual golf tournament, held last October 7 at the Franklin Country Club. A capacity crowd had a great time and raised nearly $4,000 for research.

Tenth Anniversary Christmas Extravaganza

On Sunday, December 8th, Mike Smith and Frank Campbell hosted their annual Christmas Extravaganza at the Norwood American Legion Hall. This family event featured a visit from Santa, Mike’s magic show, and a raffle. As usual, it was the best place to be that day, and this good time had by all raised $1,800.

We would like to express our gratitude to these people and companies for producing and supporting events like these of which JDF was the charitable beneficiary. This is an effective way to create greater awareness of diabetes and of JDF and to raise funds for research. We actively encourage such "third party" fundraising events and only ask that if you’d like to hold such an event, please contact our office in advance. Thank you very much!
