Help the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Beat the Bridge and Beat Diabetes!
It's never too early to start thinking about Nordstrom Beat
the Bridge, the JDF - Greater Seattle Chapter's largest
fundraising event of the year! Beat the Bridge is an 8K race in
which participants try to beat the raising of the University
Bridge partway through the race. The event also includes a 4 -
mile walk and 1 - mile fun run. This year, Beat the Bridge will
be held on Saturday, June 21 at 7:30 am. To register, call (206)
545-1510 or (800) WALK-JDF, or stop by any Seattle-area Nordstrom
store in the Customer Service department.
Last year, over 8,500 people came out to the University of
Washington's Husky Stadium help JDF raise money to fund research
to cure diabetes. 1997 will mark the 15th year that the Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation will benefit from Nordstrom Beat the Bridge.
Here are some ideas about how you can help Beat the Bridge
and Beat Diabetes:
Act as a corporate Team Captain and lead your company in raising pledges for diabetes research. Or, if you are an executive, endorse Beat the Bridge as a company activity and let everyone around you know that you care about a cure for diabetes!
Start a Family Team by gathering five or more people to raise money for diabetes research by collecting pledges and participating Beat the Bridge as runners or walkers.
A family team can stand alone or be part of a larger corporate team. An abundance of materials are available for you -- sponsor forms, a how-to packet, buttons, baloons, and posters.
Let JDF use your office's copy machine to crank out some of the thousands of copies we will make between January and June.
A week and a half to two weeks before the event, pick up and drop off materials to Team Captains all over the Greater Seattle area. We will limit your trips to four, and we will make them as close to each other as possible.
Volunteer in the office stuffing envelopes, making and collating copies, making follow-up calls, or answering the phone.
If you want to play a part, call Victoria at (206) 545-1510.

You can volunteer your time to JDF in many ways, whatever your
schedule and whatever your particular interests! JDF relies
heavily on the involvement of its volunteers for administration,
fundraising, organizing, and a whole range of other activities.
Volunteers are what make us successful!
There is a place for you in JDF. Here are some
opportunities in which you can play a role within the Seattle
Chapter:
SPECIAL EVENTS: Join a committee to assist wiith
planning, logistics, securing sponsorships, promotions, corporate
team development for the walk, or administrative work in the JDF
office. Or, volunteer on the day of the event. We can always use
more enthusiastic participants!
COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Help distribute literature about
diabetes and JDF to doctors, hospitals, clinics and businesses in
your community. We are particularly in need of volunteers in
Pierce and Snohomish counties.
NEWSLETTER: Sit on the newsletter committee! This
committee will solicit and edit articles for the Chapter's
quarterly newsletter. You could also help secure advertising and
underwriting.
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY: Are you a whiz with computer
systems and looking for a short-term project? If so, this may be
perfect for you. The Chapter needs help reconfiguring our
computer hardware and software; especially installing some new
software and creating a donor program on Access.
ADMINISTRATION: There are two different opportunities; short or long-term projects:
Short-term projects include assistance in coordinating large
mailings, data processing, and researching issues and
opportunities relevant to JDF such as business markets for new
sponsorship and donation prospects, "matching gift"
companies, companies who participate in United Way and Combined
Appeals Campaigns, educational programs and outreach
opportunities.
Long term projects include maintaining the Chapter's donor
program, assisting in planning and implementing a volunteer
recognition program, coordinating informational and outreach
material packets, and maintaining the Chapter's filing system. Or
perhaps you would like to come in a couple days each month to
help answer phones.
